Environmental Sustainability
Doing our bit, honestly
We are a small digital business, so our footprint is modest. We would rather be straight about that than make big claims. What we can do is make sensible choices every day, and help our clients do the same.
How we work
- Remote by default. Our team works remotely. We use our Canberra office for kickoff and discovery sessions, which keeps commuting and office energy use low.
- Almost fully paperless. Proposals, agreements and project records are digital.
- Fewer, longer lasting devices. We keep our equipment in service for as long as it is still secure and fit for purpose.
Where we host
We host in Australian data centres and nothing we run is hosted overseas. We choose reputable providers and aim to keep infrastructure right sized, rather than paying for capacity we do not need.
What we build
The most useful thing we can do is build digital products that are efficient. We design for performance, so pages load quickly and use less data. We build systems that last and are easy to maintain, so organisations are not forced into a full rebuild every few years. Modernising an ageing platform properly is often better for the environment than patching it forever.
Our carbon footprint
We have not yet completed a formal carbon footprint assessment, and we will not publish numbers we cannot stand behind. What we can say is where our emissions are most likely to come from. As a remote, digital business, they sit mainly in four places:
- Electricity used by our devices and equipment
- Cloud hosting and data centres
- Travel to client meetings
- The manufacture of the hardware we buy
Working remotely and hosting in Australia help limit travel and data transfer. To go further, we plan to measure our footprint over the next 12 months using the Greenhouse Gas Protocol, starting with those four areas. We will then set a reduction target from that baseline and publish our results here.
Our approach is to reduce first. If we ever use offsets for what we cannot avoid, we will say so plainly.
Our approach to AI
We use AI thoughtfully and under human supervision. For sensitive work we run our own AI model on premises, which keeps client data inside our environment and lets us use compute only where it is needed.
Supporting our community
We offer lower rates to non profits, provide some services free to community organisations, and offer internships to university students and graduates. A strong, capable community is part of a sustainable future.
What comes next
Our next step is to pursue B Corp certification. B Corp independently assesses a company's impact on its workers, community, customers and the environment, and we want our practices verified rather than simply self reported. We are at the start of that process and are not yet certified.
Alongside it, we will complete our first carbon footprint measurement and report on our progress here.
